Rachel KaufmannMemberThanks so much for your thoughts! Much appreciated!

Rachel KaufmannMemberWhat do you think of this version?
The Highlands of Affliction
1: Out of the highlands of affliction
Comes many a soul ablaze
With visions of things as yet unseen,
Beyond earth’s hastening days.
2: So too from the bitt’rest of trials
May come the sweetest of songs,
As gold in the blazing furnace tried
By struggles and ills and wrongs.
3: From a heart once broken the Artist
May form Him a masterpiece.
Beauty for ashes be given then,
The fullness of joy, increased.
4: Up from turmoil and doubting may rise
A faith yet more sure and strong.
For the trials of life work patience
When rough is the track, and long.
5: From out the valley of death and shade;
A herald of life to come.
“O Death where now is thy sting and where
The vict’ry which thou hast won?”
6: From out the thorn and the scourge and cross;
Salvation, redemption’s might.
From out the grave and the darkness came
The dawn of Eternal Light.

Rachel KaufmannMemberAny thoughts on this version?
I switched the verses per your suggestion, and fiddled around with the wording a bit here and there as well.
They Speak From the Grave
1: We hear the voice of those long passed
Beyond the realm of sight.
They labored up the mountain steeps
And faced the falling night.
2: The sword of truth they girded on.
Took up the shield of faith.
Ahead the hosts of darkness grim;
At hand no resting place.
3:Their cry awoke the echos voice
And down the following years
We hear their footsteps in the mists
As soft as falling tears.
4:Today beyond the deathless grave
We hear that battle cry:
“Fight on! Fight on! Oh turn not back!
If Truth be worthy – die!”
5:They being dead yet speak to us
Mid ages restless flight:
“Though dust to dust return again
Yet faith shall vanquish night!”

Rachel KaufmannMemberIn my opinion anyway the last verse goes quite nicely with the others!
A couple thoughts on the poetry angle; (Feel free to ignore them if they clash with your poetic preferences 🙂
-In verse 1 two lines end with the same word: believers.
– “the Comforter from Christ rained down” this line sounds a little odd to my ear. As does “who had been His believers” ( Again this is just my ear so if your ear likes it just ignore my remarks.)
Verse 3 “His spirit quickens everything” seems like it sound a bit awkward.

Rachel KaufmannMemberThanks! Yes, you have a point there.
-

Rachel KaufmannMemberOne more question. I got musescore and it seems to work very well on the whole but I can’t figure out how to add the lyrics. Any advice?
-

Rachel KaufmannMemberHow does this look?
1: On that night so long ago
Angel choirs were singing.
Hear the message of God’s love
Hear the music ringing:
“Glory be to God on high! “
Christ, the promised Savior
Left his throne to came to earth
Seek him in a manger.
2:Those who long in darkness walked
See the dawn is breaking.
Lift your eyes ye prisoners
Heaven’s armies waking.
See the King in triumph come,
Hear the trumpet sounding.
Lift your voices now and sing.
Echo hills surrounding!
3: Glory be to God on high,
Honor and dominion!
Broken is the pow’r of death.
Satan and his minions.
Give ye praise to God most high.
Sing His praises ever.
He who came to dwell with man
Reigneth King forever!

Rachel KaufmannMemberThanks!

Rachel KaufmannMemberHow does this look for the first problem spot? I’m still working on the second.
On that night so long ago
Angel choirs were singing.
Hear the message of God’s love
Hear the music ringing:
-

Rachel KaufmannMemberThat is very nice!
-

Rachel KaufmannMemberThanks for the input, both of you!
How would this sound?
“In Him are life, and being found,
In Him our all in all.
In Him our glory and reward.
From Him life’s bounties fall.”
Or this?
“In Him are life, and being found,
In Him our all in all.
In Him our glory and reward.
Ours but to heed His call. ”

Rachel KaufmannMemberOne thing which I think would improve the lyric would be to avoid switching back and forth between you and Thee. It sounds a bit disconcerting, at least to my ear!
-

Rachel KaufmannMemberVery nice!
-

Rachel KaufmannMemberNice. I think I’ll have to put that one on my list of songs I want sung at my funeral. ????
-

Rachel KaufmannMemberDoes this look any better as song material? I rearranged the meter to 8/6, cut out the verse which contained most of the repetative bits, and did a bit of rewording.
1: If Truth has fallen from it’s place
Within the human soul,
How dark the night that falls as well.
How then shall man be whole?
As storm and tumult, vertigo,
As day bereft of sun,
So is man’s life without his God.
Hopeless, alas, undone.
/
2: To turn from God is not to cease
To bear His image here.
Without Him woe betide that soul;
To know is then to fear.
Who suffers without hope or aim,
His all for nothing gives.
To live a life that’s meaningless,
Is death while yet one lives.
/
3: For Thou O Lord made man to live,
And being find in Thee.
Tho questions come and doubts arise,
Tho deep the darkness be,
Yet trusting may we turn to Thee
Who made both heart and soul.
Thou art the Way, the Truth, the Light.
In Thee man is made whole.
