I’ve always loved the poetry of Christina Rossetti. One day I was reading through some of her work and thought this one would make a great hymn.
In working on the piece, the composition ended up going places that I recognize will make this piece harder than some congregations will want to attempt. However I felt it communicated the text so well that I didn’t want to revise it to make it simpler. As such, I am calling this piece a hybrid choral / congregational hymn. Some congregations might attempt it but I also see it as a great option for our youth groups to sing.
Also, this is one of those pieces that shape notes really don’t do much for it so I’ve only set it in Standard Notation.
